The ambitious Bay to Baker Trail project crossed a major milestone last month when the section that crosses under I-5 was opened to the public for the first time.

The trail, which will eventually stretch from Little Squalicum Park all the way to the foot of Mount Baker, requires cooperation between several different municipalities. It is arguably the most ambitious trail project ever attempted in the area, and one of its largest obstacles is—of course—finding a pedestrian route across the interstate.

But now that challenge is behind us, as the 1.5 mile section of trail connecting Cornwall Park and Irongate Road is now open!

The trail was funded in part by a grant from the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program. Though there are still many miles of the Bay to Baker trail yet to be completed, having this section now open is a huge step forward. And we should celebrate.
