City of Bellingham and Whatcom County officials participated in a joint training exercise this week to prepare for a 9.0 magnitude earthquake that many predict will eventually shake the Pacific Northwest. Bellingham will likely escape much of the damage inflicted by such a quake. In fact, The New York Times named Bellingham the 3rd lowest risk metro area in the nation, but preparedness never hurt anyone.
When the Really Big One does hit, the Whatcom Volunteer Center, now a part of the Opportunity Council, has been designated the nerve center for coordinating the local volunteer relief effort.
To explain their plans, the Volunteer Center is hosting a 2-hour public presentation on Saturday, January 23rd. If you’d like to lend a hand in the event of a natural disaster, this event would be a great place to meet the right people.
